Chapter 30

Remote control of a shared screen

On this page

Somebody shares a screen and you want to show them where to click – or they want you to fix something for them? With remote control you use your mouse and keyboard on their shared screen. Available from Business. The screen that is controlled has to be shared from the Coviqo desktop app for Windows (version 0.4 or newer); controlling works from any Coviqo app, also the browser.

Asking for control#

  1. Open the shared screen large (meetings: click the share, voice rooms and calls: the big view).
  2. Click Request control at the bottom right of the share (German UI: Steuerung anfragen). The button only appears when the screen can be controlled.
  3. The person sharing now sees a dialog of their computer: "Anna wants to control your screen" with Allow and Deny. While you wait, the button says Requested … – click it to withdraw your request.

If they allow it, you see "You control the screen of Anna" and a red frame. Click into the share and use your mouse, the scroll wheel and your keyboard as usual. Stop control at the top right ends it.

Good to know:

  • Only one person can control a screen at a time.
  • Keys are sent as keys, not as characters – what you type follows the keyboard layout of the other computer.
  • The Windows key, media keys and Ctrl+Alt+Del do not work remotely; neither do windows that need administrator rights (for example Windows' "Do you want to allow this app …" prompts) and the lock screen.
  • There is no clipboard and no file transfer.
  • If only one window is shared, you can only click into that window.

When somebody asks to control your screen#

You decide in a dialog of Windows – Coviqo's web page cannot answer it for you. Deny is preselected; if you do not answer within a minute, the request is denied. The dialog says who is asking and which screen or window you share.

While somebody controls your screen:

  • a red frame surrounds the shared screen or window and a red banner says "Anna is controlling your screen – press Esc twice or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to stop";
  • stop at any time: press Esc twice quickly, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S, click Stop in the banner or in the call, or stop sharing;
  • the control ends by itself after 2 minutes without input and after 60 minutes at the latest;
  • the other person cannot operate Coviqo itself on your computer (no clicking in Coviqo windows).

Start and end of every remote control session are recorded in the audit log of the space (who controlled whose screen, when, for how long) – never what was done.

Note

Remote control is not offered in end-to-end encrypted rooms and calls. On macOS and Linux your screen cannot be controlled yet (you can control other people's screens from there).
