Chapter 16

Website embed

On this page

Space admins can show their space on their own website: a space card with the member and online count, a feed of up to three announcement rooms and a widget with who is in the voice rooms right now. The website loads the data from a public address without cookies and without signing in. The embed is available on all plans and off until you switch it on.

Switching the embed on#

  1. Open Space settings › Public profile & directory › Website embed (you need the permission Manage space).
  2. Read the warning Everything you release here becomes public at the top.
  3. Switch on Enable embed and choose what to show (below), then save.

While the embed is off, every public address of your space answers "not found" – nobody can even tell whether the space exists.

What you can release#

Setting What it does
Feed Up to 3 chat rooms whose messages are shown publicly, newest first. You can only pick chat rooms that a new member with just the default role can see and that are not end-to-end encrypted. Thread replies, system messages and deleted messages are never shown.
Show images and clips Images and videos posted in the feed rooms are shown too, through short-lived links (valid for 5 minutes). Other files are never shown.
Voice channel widget Shows how many people are in your voice rooms. Pick rooms under Voice rooms or leave the selection empty to show all suitable voice rooms.
Names in the widget Anonymous – head count only shows only the number of people per room. Names with consent shows the name and picture of members who allowed it in their profile for this space (Privacy and your data › Permissions per space); everybody else stays anonymous. Bots are always anonymous.
Allowed websites Up to 10 addresses such as https://www.example.com that may load the data in the browser. Empty = any website.

Coviqo checks the rules every time the data is loaded: if a released room is later made private or end-to-end encrypted, it disappears from the embed by itself.

Warning: Messages in the feed rooms are public with the author's name and profile picture – members are not asked one by one. Only release rooms meant for announcements, do not use the embed for private or closed communities, and check whether you need to update your own privacy policy. Search engines and archives can keep copies of what you publish.

Allowed websites is not a lock: anyone can still fetch the data directly, for example with a script on a server. It only stops other websites from reading it in a visitor's browser.

Adding it to your website#

Once the embed is on and saved, the page shows Code for your website – the public addresses of the space card, the feed and the voice channels plus a small HTML and JavaScript example you can copy – and a Live preview of what visitors will see. Responses are cached briefly, so changes appear after about a minute (the voice widget after about 15 seconds).

Each visitor (more precisely: each IP address) may load the embed up to 120 times a minute; that is plenty for a normal website.

Every change to these settings is recorded in the space's activity log.
