Chapter 10
Sound profiles (Klangprofile)
On this page
A sound profile changes how voices sound for everyone listening in a voice room, a lobby or a Funk channel – a walkie-talkie for a gaming squad, a helmet radio for a flight simulator group, a PA announcement with a gong in a warehouse, or the echo of a big hall for an event room.
Sound profiles never change your voice on its own: a profile always belongs to a room, a lobby or a Funk channel, and everybody there sees that it is on. Your voice is sent unchanged – the effect is added on each listener's device. Recordings, transcripts and summaries therefore never contain effects, and scheduled meetings never use sound profiles.
Presets#
Every plan includes these presets, as far as the platform operator has switched them on:
| Preset | Sound |
|---|---|
| No effect | Voices sound as they are |
| Radio / walkie-talkie | Narrow band, a little crackle, static while someone talks, a click at the start and a roger beep at the end |
| Helmet radio / pilot | Like radio, but compressed and slightly muffled |
| Telephone | Classic telephone line (300–3400 Hz) |
| PA / megaphone | Loudspeaker with reverb and a gong before someone starts talking after a pause |
| Hall / hangar | Large room with a long reverb tail |
The operator of the platform decides which presets are available and can fine-tune how they sound. PA / megaphone and Hall / hangar are switched off by default. A preset that is switched off does not appear in any selection. A room, lobby or Funk channel that already uses it keeps its setting, but voices sound normal until the preset is switched on again; the room settings then show a short note.
Giving a room a sound profile#
- Open the room's settings (the ⋯ menu of the room → Room settings).
- Choose Voice & media › Sound profile.
- Pick a preset or one of your space's own profiles. No effect switches it off again.
The change applies immediately for everyone in the room. The tab is there for voice rooms and lobbies. You need Manage rooms in the room and Manage sound profiles in the space.
Lobbies: give the lobby a profile – all its sessions (Runden) use it automatically. A single session cannot have its own profile.
Funk channels: a Funk channel can have its own profile. Funk messages then sound like that channel wherever they arrive.
How you see that an effect is on#
- In the sidebar a small sound-wave icon appears after the room name.
- In the voice area of the room and in the voice panel of the sidebar you see Sound effect on · <profile> (German: Funk-Klang aktiv · <Profil>). Hover over it for details.
Own profiles (Space settings › Voice & media › Sound profiles)#
Administrators (permission Manage sound profiles) create their own profiles:
- Open Space settings › Voice & media › Sound profiles and click New profile – or Start from "…" next to a preset to copy its values.
- Give the profile a name and adjust the sliders:
- Frequency range: Low cut and High cut narrow the sound (radio and telephone voices).
- Character: Distortion, Compression, Noise / static – the noise plays all the time or only while someone talks.
- Room: Reverb size and Reverb amount.
- Echo: Echo time, Echo repeats, Echo amount.
- Level: Volume.
- Start and end sound: none, click, beep (roger), gong or your own sound.
- Click Test my voice to hear yourself through the profile (use headphones). Every slider change is audible right away.
- Click Save profile.
Own sounds: choose Upload sound and pick any audio file. Coviqo shortens it to one second, converts it and checks it for malware before anybody hears it. The sound is kept in the space files.
Deleting a profile makes the rooms that used it sound normal again.
Switching effects off for yourself#
If effects make voices hard to understand for you, open Settings › Audio & video › Advanced › Sound effects & soundboard and switch on Sound effects off for me. You then hear every voice unchanged and without start and end sounds, in every room and on every device where you are signed in. The badge in the room stays visible so you know what the others hear.
Some browsers (for example Firefox and Safari) cannot play sound effects. There you hear the voices unchanged; the badge says so.
