Chapter 41
Feed
The room module Feed follows news sources for a room: blogs, release notes, status pages, news sites – anything that offers an RSS, Atom or JSON feed. New posts appear in the room's Feed tab, and if you like also in the chat.
Switching the module on#
In the room settings under Content, switch on Feed. The room gets the tab Feed.
Reading posts#
The tab lists the newest posts of all feeds of the room: title, source, time, a short summary and – where the feed has one – a preview image. Click a title to open the post in a new browser tab.
- Filter: with more than one feed, the menu above the list shows the posts of one feed only (All feeds shows everything).
- New posts: posts that arrived since your last visit are marked New; the line above the list counts them. Opening the tab counts as seen – the next visit starts fresh.
- Load more at the end of the list shows older posts. Coviqo keeps the newest 200 posts per feed.
New posts appear without reloading while the tab is open.
Managing feeds#
People with the permission Manage feeds (Feeds verwalten – moderators and managers by default) or Manage room see Manage (Verwalten) in the tab – also in the room settings under Content – with Add feed. Each feed has
- a feed address – the address of the RSS, Atom or JSON feed (not the web page itself; many sites link it as "RSS" or "Feed"),
- an optional display name – without it, Coviqo shows the feed's own title,
- Check for new posts – how often Coviqo looks for new posts (every 10 minutes up to once a day; your plan sets the shortest interval),
- Also post new posts in the chat (Neue Beiträge zusätzlich im Chat posten) – new posts additionally appear in the room chat as a small feed card with title and link (at most five per check; nothing is posted when the feed is added).
When you add a feed, Coviqo loads it once. If that does not work, the dialog says why – for example This address is not an RSS, Atom or JSON feed, The address could not be reached or The address answered with an error (HTTP 404).
In the list of feeds, Fetch now checks a feed right away, the pencil edits it and the bin removes it together with its stored posts. A feed that keeps failing is marked Error; after many failures in a row it is Paused – saving it again or Fetch now resumes it.
Plans#
| Plan | Feeds per room | Shortest interval |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 1 | 30 minutes |
| Community Pro | 10 | 15 minutes |
| Business | 10 | 10 minutes |
| Enterprise | 25 | 10 minutes |
After a change to a smaller plan, the oldest feeds of a room keep working up to the new limit; the others are marked Above plan limit and wait.
Privacy and security#
The Coviqo server loads the feeds – the operators of the news sources see the server, never who reads the posts.
Preview images are loaded through Coviqo's image proxy; if your space switched external images off, posts are shown
without images. Posts are shown as plain text, links only open http and https addresses. Feeds on internal or
private network addresses are refused. Feeds are not available in end-to-end encrypted rooms.
