Chapter 60

Paid memberships and event tickets

On this page

Communities can sell memberships (a monthly or yearly subscription that gives roles) and tickets for events. The money goes straight to the community's own Stripe account – the community is the seller. Coviqo receives a platform fee per payment (5 % by default, at least €0.50, on top of Stripe's fees). For a ticket the fee is never more than its price; for memberships the minimum is built into the percentage – a €5 membership pays 10 %, from €10 it is 5 %.

Paid memberships and paid tickets are available in community spaces from the Community Pro plan. Free tickets with a limited number of seats work on every plan.

Currently switched off. Selling memberships and tickets is disabled on the platform until the operator switches it on. While it is off, you don't see Memberships & tickets in the space settings, the membership page or Settings → Memberships, and events only offer free tickets with a limited number of seats.

18+ communities cannot sell memberships or tickets at all – free tickets are still possible.

New space owner: when the ownership of a space changes, the payout account of the previous owner is disconnected and selling pauses. The new owner sets up their own payout account. Both are notified.

Setting up payouts (space owner)#

  1. Open Space settings → Memberships & tickets.
  2. Under Payouts, choose the country of the payout account (it cannot be changed later).
  3. Read and accept the seller terms of the platform.
  4. Click Set up payouts. Stripe guides you through the identity check and the bank account. Coviqo never sees these details.
  5. Back in Coviqo the status shows Pending, Verified or Restricted. With Refresh status you read it again; Open Stripe dashboard leads to payouts, receipts, refunds and disputes.

Only the owner of the space can set up the payout account. Administrators and roles with Manage billing can create tiers and tickets and issue refunds.

Your community is the seller: Stripe issues the receipts in your name, and refunds, disputes and taxes are your responsibility. If the platform publishes a new version of the seller terms, selling pauses until the owner accepts it.

Membership tiers#

  1. Click Add tier.
  2. Enter a name, the benefits (shown to members), a price per month and/or per year and the currency.
  3. Pick the roles members get while their membership is active – for example a coloured "Supporter" role that is shown separately in the member list. Roles with moderation or administration permissions cannot be linked.
  4. Save. Share the membership page (/s/<space>/membership) with your members.

Price changes apply to new memberships; running memberships keep their price. Tiers are archived instead of deleted.

Becoming a member#

  1. Open the membership page of the community (the admins share the link /s/<space>/membership).
  2. Choose Join monthly or Join yearly.
  3. Confirm that the membership should start right away.
  4. Pay on the Stripe page. Your roles appear as soon as the payment is confirmed.

Under Settings → Memberships you see all your memberships. Manage opens the community's customer portal: cancel to the end of the period, change the payment method, download receipts.

If a renewal payment fails, your benefits stay for 3 days while Stripe tries again. Update your payment method in time – afterwards the roles pause until the payment succeeds.

Tickets for events#

  1. Open an event in the calendar (single events only, no series).
  2. Under Tickets, click Ticket type: name, price (0 = free), seats and the end of the sale.
  3. People open the event and click Get ticket (free) or Buy (paid). A valid ticket is their RSVP and opens the event's room or meeting.
  4. As an organiser, Sold tickets lists all tickets. Refund returns the full amount through Stripe (a refund in the Stripe dashboard works too); the person loses access to the event.

While an event has tickets, attending is only possible with a ticket.
