Community rules template for clans and online communities

Clear rules make moderation easier and help new members feel welcome. This template covers the basics – adapt it to your group and keep it short.

Tips for good rules

  • Short beats complete. Ten clear rules are read; three pages are not.
  • Say what happens. Members should know what a warning, a timeout or a ban means.
  • Name a contact. Who do people turn to with problems or reports?
  • Date the version. When you change the rules, say so.

The template

Community rules
Rules of [Community name]
Version: [Date]

Welcome! These rules apply in all rooms, voice rooms and direct messages between members.

1. Be respectful. No insults, harassment, discrimination or threats.
2. Keep it legal. No illegal content, no piracy, no sharing of other people's private data.
3. No spam. No mass mentions, flooding, unsolicited advertising or links to scams.
4. Use the right room. Check the room description before posting.
5. Voice etiquette: use push-to-talk or mute when there is background noise. Let others finish speaking. Ask before recording or streaming.
6. Content: no explicit, violent or shocking content outside rooms marked for it.
7. Cheating and exploits: [your rule, e.g. "no cheats, no sharing of exploits"].
8. Names and profile pictures must follow these rules too.
9. Follow the instructions of moderators. If you disagree, talk to them in private or contact [contact].
10. Report problems with the report function or to [moderator role / contact].

What happens if rules are broken
- Minor cases: a warning.
- Repeated or serious cases: a timeout (you can read, but not speak or write).
- Severe cases: removal or a ban.

Questions? Contact [Name / role].

How to use it in Coviqo

  1. Add the rules to your space

Open Space settings › Invites & joining › Rules & onboarding and paste the text. Markdown (bold, lists, links) is supported. New members must accept the rules before they can write in the space.

  2. Give a role on acceptance

Under Assign roles after accepting, pick up to five roles – for example a member role that opens the community rooms.

  3. Ask for a new acceptance after changes

When you change the rules materially, tick Everyone must accept the rules again when saving.

  4. Make them easy to find

Members can open the rules any time via Rules in the space overview or space menu. You can also add a Rules / welcome card to the overview, or set up a /rules command with the Commands template of the Coviqo bots.

Whether onboarding is shown to new members depends on your plan – see pricing. You can prepare it in any case.

Frequently asked questions

Can members write before they accept the rules?

No. As long as rules are switched on, members can only send messages in the space after accepting them. External guests also see the rules.

How do I enforce the rules?

Moderators can warn, time out, kick or ban members, depending on their permissions. The AutoMod template of the Coviqo bots can block words, links, mass mentions and flooding automatically.

Can I use this template outside Coviqo?

Yes. The template is plain text and free to use anywhere.
