Matrix bridge for your Coviqo chat rooms

Matrix is an open, federated chat protocol. The bridge connects a Coviqo chat room with a room on any Matrix homeserver, including your community’s own. People on Matrix keep their Matrix app, people in Coviqo keep Coviqo.

Setting it up

Owners and admins of a space find the bridge under Space settings → Apps & integrations → Matrix bridge.

  1. Switch it on

Turn on Matrix bridge in this space.

  2. Add a bot account

Create a dedicated Matrix user for the bridge on the homeserver of your choice. Enter the homeserver address and its access token. Coviqo checks the token, stores it encrypted and never shows it again.

  3. Connect a room

Pick the Coviqo room and enter the Matrix room address or ID. For a private Matrix room, invite the bot user first. Optionally import the last 50 Matrix messages.

  4. Confirm

Read the notice that messages of this room are transferred to the homeserver and confirm it. The bot joins the Matrix room.

What is relayed

  • Messages in both directions. From Coviqo they appear as “Name (Coviqo): text”; from Matrix with the person’s name, picture and a Matrix badge.
  • Replies and threads, edits and deletions.
  • Reactions, one per emoji from the bridge.
  • Attachments up to 20 MB, scanned for malware like every upload.
  • Mentions become plain names. People on Matrix cannot ping anybody in Coviqo, and @everyone from Matrix does nothing.

Where your messages go

Everyone in a connected room sees a notice that the room is connected with Matrix and to which homeserver messages are transferred. What you write there leaves Coviqo: the Matrix network distributes it to all servers taking part in the room. Deleting a message in Coviqo also removes its copy on Matrix, but copies that were already relayed stay on Matrix when a Coviqo account is deleted.

Only unencrypted rooms can be connected. End-to-end encrypted Coviqo rooms and encrypted Matrix rooms cannot be bridged. Organisations can forbid bridges for all their spaces.

Status and troubleshooting

Each bot account and each connection shows its state – Active, Degraded, Paused or Error – and when something was last relayed. If a token was revoked, replace it for the same Matrix user. If the homeserver limits requests or is unreachable, Coviqo retries automatically.

Switching a connection off pauses it; messages written during a pause are not relayed later. Disconnect stops relaying for good, the bot leaves the Matrix room, and messages relayed so far stay on both sides.

Plans

The Matrix bridge is not part of the Free plan. The plan decides how many rooms of a space can be connected – see pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Do people on Matrix need a Coviqo account?

No. They keep using their Matrix app and their own account. Their messages appear in Coviqo with their name, picture and a badge with their homeserver.

Can I connect an end-to-end encrypted room?

No. Neither end-to-end encrypted Coviqo rooms nor encrypted Matrix rooms can be connected. If a connected Matrix room becomes encrypted, the connection shows an error and you disconnect it.

What happens when I disconnect a room?

Relaying stops for good and the bot leaves the Matrix room. Messages relayed so far stay on both sides.

Can my organisation block Matrix bridges?

Yes. An organisation policy can forbid bridges. Then no room of its spaces can be connected, and messages of its managed members are never relayed to Matrix.

Step-by-step instructions

  • Digital sovereignty

What digital sovereignty means for SMBs and clubs: provider dependency, data location, transfers, open standards, exit plan and where AI runs.

  • Voice rooms

Persistent voice rooms you simply walk into: see who is talking, move people between rooms, radio into other rooms – hosted in the EU.

  • Community move

Plan a community move step by step: roles and channels, announcement, transition period, moderation, bots, invite links and onboarding for new members.
